Fire Extinguisher Maintenance & Servicing

You must ensure that periodic servicing and maintenance are carried out on all your fire extinguishers, to satisfy the requirements of The Regulatory (Fire Safety) Reform Order 2005, and BS 5306: part 3:2009.  All portable fire extinguishers require an annual basic inspection service to be completed by a competent person. In addition, extinguishers require either an extended service or an overhaul, at regular intervals.

The extended service, for water based extinguishers, should be carried out on a five-yearly basis, and would include discharge testing of the extinguisher, followed by a more thorough internal/external inspection.

The overhaul service required for CO2 extinguishers involves the CO2 cylinder being shot blasted, hydraulic pressure tested and replacement valves fitted, before the cylinder is re-painted and then finally refilled.

On completion of annual maintenance, a Certificate of Maintenance, valid for twelve months, will be issued.
