Health and Safety Signs

The Health and Safety (Safety Signs and Signals) Regulations state that: "…signs must be used, where necessary, to help people identify escape routes and fire fighting equipment."

This applies to all places where people are employed. As an employer, you are required to provide specific safety signage wherever there is a risk that has not been avoided or controlled by other means.

For a sign to comply with the regulations, it must be in pictogram form - i.e. including a picture of a running man, or directional arrow - and should be supplemented by text to make the sign more easily understood. You must not display signs that use only text.

Notices must be used, where necessary, to provide the following:

• instructions on how to use any fire safety equipment;
• the actions to be taken in the event of a fire;
• help for the fire and rescue services (e.g. location of sprinkler valves or electrical cut-off switches).
